  1. Overcrowded Living Conditions: Favelas are densely populated areas where space is scarce. Families often live in small, makeshift dwellings or shanty houses constructed from a variety of materials such as corrugated metal, wood, or cardboard. These homes are typically built haphazardly, resulting in a lack of proper ventilation, privacy, and safety.
  2. Informal Settlements and Land Tenure: Favelas often arise as a result of rapid urbanization and a lack of affordable housing options. The future of American housing seems to be heading towards a scenario reminiscent of favelas due to several contributing factors. Let’s explore these factors in more detail:

  1. Unaffordable Homes: The escalating cost of housing in the United States has made homeownership increasingly unattainable for a significant portion of the population. Rising home prices, coupled with stagnant wages, have created a stark affordability gap.
